Story of Learning for Speacials

For Chinese Studies I learned how to play Chinese Chess. On Monday I had no idea how to play although I used to play when I was little. When my teacher asked if I knew how to play in the beginning I said no, but when I got used to playing I told her I know how to play because now I don't need to look at the instructions. Although my partner also knows how to play we had big arguments time to time. When that happens I take out the instructions book to prove my partner wrong. Some challenges for me were tests. Since I am in the MNN class it is very hard for me to get 100% on my Chinese test. How I am going to adjust is to study more for the tests because I don't study at all. Also I take a long time to read the lesson without pin yin. So I should read the lesson more often.

For art I learned how to use my fingers and hands to find out how to measure your face. This helps me to find out how much spacing I need when I am drawing my self portraits. This really helped me out when we were drawing our faces. In the beginning I had a lot of troubles but when I used this strategy I was able to do better than before I used this strategy. A challenge for me was the great ape portraits. My ape looked hard to draw so I didn't do good on drawing the face. But in the end my ape looked much better then in the beginning when I thought my ape will look horrible. I think I should ask my sister for tips on drawing well because I am not good at drawing.

For Music I learned how to read notes. For a long time I had no idea how to read notes, so when we were playing on the xylophones I was clueless. But I was saved by having to do a test on how to read notes. This helped me a lot because now the notes do not have any letters on them so I cannot rely on the letters beneath the notes. Some challenges are reading and remembering the notes. Sometimes when it has been a long time since the last music class I forget notes. To get over this problem I think I should write the notes every time I am on vacation.

For P.E. I learned how to dig/bump the ball in volley ball. All I know about volley ball was that he bump, set and spike. When I watch volley ball on tv it looks very easy to bump, set and spike but when I tried doing it, it was very hard. First I could barely have my hand over the net. Every time I bump the volley ball it goes out of bounds except for one time. Some challenges for me is swimming. I am okay at swimming, but I have to breath a lot when I have done a lap or so. To build my stamina I think I should run more and swim more during my spare time during the summer.

For counseling I learned how to find out how to help people from bullies. I was helped by role plays to help me understand how to help people from bullies. A challenge was that trying to understand what kind of bullying. I don't really get what kind of bullying are there. I only know that there is cyber bullying. To help me out how to find out what kind of bullying are there I think I should pay more attention during class.

Story of learning

I am not doing that good on my writing goals. I am trying to always show not tell, but sometimes I forget about my goal. Although I am doing it sometimes I think I was trying to do too much because of my goal. Sometimes I put too much detail that I may of made my story boring. In the beginning I was following my reading goal, but as I got used to reading realistic fiction I kept on getting realistic fiction books. I should try to go to the library more often and choose different genres. Like after the book fair I have only read realistic fiction books such as: Walk Two Moons, The Kid in the Red Jacket, and a few more books. I am so far doing good on my math goal. I am working with partners when I have the chance. And I sometimes learn from them. They either prove me wrong or tell me that I had made a mistake and teaching me strategies I forgot or new strategies to solve problem.

Since I have completed my math goal I am going to try not to use the calculator that often. Also try going with different partners which I have done only twice. I also want other people in my group to participate so maybe act like I don't know the answer. Sometimes I kind of copy my friend what he did so try not to copy from my partners or ask other people if I got the answer. Also I should always check my answer just in case I have made a mistake which I often do.

For writing I will should not make too much details because it may not make sense and they may get bored because of the amount of detail I have in my sentence. Also for the summer I should probably have a journal so I can remember what I did during the summer because I can develop my writing skills and remember my summer vacation cause it goes so fast. I also should pay a lot more attention during writing class cause I usually forget about what Mr. Daw has taught me. For reading do not read easy books. I can know that I am reading easy books by reading more than the amount of minutes I have read. But sometimes I can keep my pace of reading fast so I can read more pages than the amount of minutes.

My ultimate goal to get ready for 6th grade is to read. I usually don't read a lot so when I go to 6th grade I will struggle to finish books. I should read at least 20-30 minutes everyday. This will help me learn how to write and also helps me read much faster. I should also read books that are recommended from other people.

My real success this year for reading is that I am able to identify most of the authors message. For example for the book Walk Two Moons, I figured that the authors message was don't judge a person too early and also trust other people. For my writing was that I am able to make my stories into 3 proper paragraphs. Also I was able to have a lot of details in my sentences. For my math I was able to make fractions into common denominators. Also I am now able to multiply fractions which is a very big accomplishment for me. One of my challenges for reading was the literature circle books. Since I had to put a lot of connections and thinking. Also when I fall behind on reading I have a hard time trying to catch up. For writing I think my challenge was the realistic fiction story. On my story I had to make up a lot of things so that my story didn't have an authors message. For a narrative writing I didn't need to make up anything so it was easier. My math challenge was to work with problem solving. Sometimes they are very easy or just the right level. But once in a while I do get hard questions. I have to do deep thinking and later on have to have help from other people.

I have over come my reading challenge by actually reading faster. The first 10 minutes of my reading is the part when I am fast. Then I start to relax so I read very slowly. But now I relax just for 2 minutes and try getting my pace back. I have over come my writing challenge by trying to think of reality and reading other peoples stories to get ideas. My math challenge I have over come by asking my parents to give me key clues.

I have always brought my home work folder to school and do my home work. If I don't know that days home work I always do the next days home work. I always do best to finish my school work. I cooperate with my friends very well. I will explain something that they need help with. I don't usually offend them or get in a fight with them. I am very good at working with others in school. If I am asked to do something I will always try to do what they have asked. I also work well on the open responses. I do sometimes well on my study habits. When I am asked to show my work I always do but I my have some difficulty explaining.

1. What is one piece of important learning in reading or writing you have gained this week?

My important learning in reading was that it is very important that you use the reading sheets for the project because you can jot down the fact. You can also ask questions on one sheet and if you get a response you have a space to write it down. If you run out of that sheet you can use a different sheet. You should not get all facts or questions or responses because you aren't even when you do the presentation. Also you can not only rely on the internet because it may not be true and on your partner.
2. Explain how this has helped you in your reading or writing.

This has helped me on my reading by sharing my interesting facts more frequently and not only get answers from my partner. If we didn't agree with the internet we just went straight to the books or other websites to make sure. This also made me more interested on my topic and learn a lot more about my topic. It is also good to chose topics that you don't really know or not really interested in.

3. Explain what the difference is between a common noun and a proper noun.

A common noun is a noun that is not specific. Such as party, cat, dog, room, boy, and lots more. A proper noun is a noun that is specific. Such as Halloween party, a cougar, Huskie, blue room, John.

Math Reflection

1. Tell why you think it is important to be able to divide numbers. For what kind of problems do you need to use division?

It is important to know how to divide because when we have to share something we can use division to find out. The time we use division is when we share something or split something equally.

2. Tell what part of this unit was the most difficult for you and why. Describe what you did to overcome any difficulties you had.

Well the most difficult thing for me was dividing smaller numbers than the divisor. Example 6/3.20. I found out that the way to do this division was to do 320/6 than put the decimal point where you think it would go. The way to find where to put the decimal point is by making a estimate.

Parables

The parable about the Sower and the Seed is about a sower scattering seeds everywhere. The seeds that land on the roads that gets eaten by the crows. Like the person that heard the lord, but does not do anything about it and the evil one will come and snatch it away. The seeds that landed on the rocks is the person that hears the lord and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root he does not last long. The seeds that landed on the thorns are the ones who heard the lord, but worries of this life. The seeds that landed on good soil is the ones who hears the lord and understands it.

The sower, Jesus and the people listening to Jesus. The lesson that they learned is that if you hear from your lord do what he says and do not ignore. This connects with my life because when someone told me a secret I was like the one who was planted on the rocks because it didn't last long until I told someone.

Writing Reflection

1. What do I notice about myself as a writer as I read through my work?

I notice that I have a lot of errors or I forgotten a word. Also I notice that I use the same word to many times. I realize that I need to add some more details.

2. How have I changed as a writer so far?

I have changed by knowing how to use commas when you have a conversation. Also now I know how to use capital letters, punctuations and paragraphing. Now I use synonyms for some words I used too much.

3. What are three things I do well as a writer?

First I try describing the object. For example a baseball spinning will be like the spinning bullet.
Second thing is that I try making people get into the story.
Third I try to stick on 1 subject.

4. What are some things I want to get stronger at as a writer?

Try not to tell I want to show the writing. I also want to know how to use explanation marks and try not to make people bored by using the same word and also saying the same thing over and over.

5. What is my favorite piece, and what are the things I love about it?

My favorite piece is my first grade 5 narrative, Injured because it seems like its my first ever writing piece. Also I feel like I did a good job on that piece because for me it felt like everyone was in that story

Math

I liked playing factor captor because it helps me learn the factors of numbers I don't know. It also helps me memorize some of the prime numbers I don't know that well. It also was a fun game because it helps me now my multiplication table over 10. The best part was that I kept on beating Pablo in this game.

Arrays could help people remember the factors of a number because an 8 by 3 array could help me know that some of 24's factors are 8 and 3. Also it could help you memorize 8x3=24 because you could count the numbers of dots.

Page 13 lesson 1.5
I liked this lesson because it helps me know the divisibility rule. Because usually I have to take a long time to find out that a certain number is divisible by that number.
